CEDAR CITY, Utah, Nov. 11 – Southern Utah University cornerback
LeShaun Sims has been named ROOT Sports Big Sky Conference Defensive co-Player of the Week for his play in the Thunderbirds' 27-21 win at Weber State last Saturday.
Sims, a redshirt sophomore from Las Vegas, Nev. (Agassi Prep) had two key plays in the game that both resulted in Thunderbird scores. The first was an interception early in the third period that he returned 20 yards to the WSU 12-yard line to set up SUU's go-ahead touchdown. The second was a fumble recovery on the Wildcats' ensuing possession that led to an SUU field goal and a 17-7 advantage.
Sims also tallied four tackles, including a tackle for loss, in the game.
Sims is SUU's seventh player of the week this season. He joins kicker Colton Cook, who has been honored three times, punter Brock Miller, cornerback Tyree Mills and linebacker Matt Holley, as honorees.
Sims shared this week's recognition with Montana safety Matt Hermanson, who had 11 tackles and returned a fumble for a touchdown in the Grizzlies' 31-27 win at South Dakota. Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams earned Offensive Player of the Week while Montana return specialist Ellis Henderson earned special teams honors.
