Southern Utah Drops Close 65-57 Decision at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. - Nov. 22 - Southern Utah got to within two points of Nebraska midway through the first half and fought to stay close in the second, but fell 65-57 when the final whistle sounded in Lincoln on Saturday night. The loss drops the Thunderbirds to 0-3 on the year, while Huskers move to 3-0.

Nebraska recorded the first points of the game as NU's Nikki Bober hit an opening jumper, but that shot was answered by Southern Utah's Kaila Goff as the two teams rallied back and forth.

The Huskers pulled together a 13-5 run over the first five minutes of the game, but that lead was shaved down to two points (17-15) as freshman Cassie Platt ripped off ten consecutive points in a 10-4 run by the Thunderbirds.

Southern Utah matched Nebraska in shooting percentage during the first 20 minutes as SUU shot 41.4 percent from the field to 41.5 percent for its opponent. However, it was the nine NU offensive rebounds and 12 Thunderbird turnovers that gave the Huskers a 41-30 lead going into the intermission.

The T-Birds trimmed the lead to single digits multiple times during the second half, including a a 12-3 run by Southern Utah over the span of almost six minutes to cut a lead from 17 (56-39) down to eight (59-51).

However, Nebraska held off the pesky 'Birds down the stretch to capture the 65-57 home victory.

Goff and Platt led the Thunderbirds with ten points each as freshman Cassi Jones pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds to add to her seven points on the night. Nebraska's Cory Montgomery led all scorers with 21 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Teammate Dominique Kelley joined her in double figures with 14.

Southern Utah will be back on home on Tuesday night when the Thunderbirds host the Idaho State Bengals at 5:00 p.m. in the Centrum.
