CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah Basketball Coach Todd Simon announced today the signing of forward Hamdi Karoui (Paris, France) from Utah State University Eastern.
“Hamdi is a versatile, skilled forward with experience at the under-19 World Championship level as well as at Junior College,” Simon said. “His size and skill set will be an asset for us in creating mismatches. We are excited about the potential he brings to Southern Utah.”
Last season he averaged 13.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while shooting 54.4% from the floor, 33.3% from beyond the arch, and 85.2% from the free throw line before an injury ended his season. Karoui led USU Eastern in scoring as a freshman at 10.7 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 53.9% from the field.
The 6'7”, 220 lb. French native was named All-Region 18 honorable mention as a freshman at USU Eastern. He scored in double figures in 19 of 36 games in his NJCAA career with a career high of 32 points. He also was a member Tunisia's under 19 team at the FIBA World Championships and participated in Basketball Without Borders in Africa where he was named an All-Star game MVP.
Karoui is the 6th signee for the Thunderbirds joining 6'11 Croatian big man Ivan Madunic, 6'8 Alaskan shooter Jacob Calloway, 6'6 NJCAA All-American Elliott Smith, 6'4 Mississippi guard Decardo Day, and 6'4 Seattle transfer Jadon Cohee of Canada.
