Kit Janes is in his third season as assistant coach of Southern
Utah’s women’s program. Janes’ responsibilities include the fundamental
development of the post players, recruiting, on-floor practice duties,
game preparation, travel coordination and fall conditioning workouts.
“This
is a great opportunity for me and my family at this time of our lives,”
Janes says. “SUU has been great to me and my family and this gives me a
chance to give a little back. At the same time, I’m excited and honored
to be a part of a great program and have the chance to work with these
great young ladies.”
Under Coach Janes, Anne
Westwood was named second-team all-conference at the end of the year
with solid performances in the paint for the Thunderbirds.
Coach
Janes has already served as an assistant coach for Hodson at the high
school level for 21 years, the first 13 of which came at Cedar HS,
followed by an eight-year stint at Canyon View HS.
He
started his basketball coaching career at Hayden (Colo.) HS from
1980-83, before returning to Cedar City to begin work at CHS. Janes
also coached football at CHS and had two tours of duty at SUU, the
first coming in 1979-80, followed by another stint in 1989-90.
He
and his wife, Diane, have been married for 30 years and the couple are
the parents of four sons; Kade, former SUU men’s basketball players
Rand and Nate, and Jeff, who is a junior on SUU’s football team, and a
daughter Amanda. They also have seven grandchildren. Janes played tight
end for the Thunderbird football program for four seasons from 1975 to
1979, and was an NAIA All-America selection in 1978.
