Wilton comes to SUU with a very impressive resume including one of the highest winning percentages in NCAA history. He has coached on both the men and women’s side, most recently as an assistant coach for the BYU Cougars men’s team. While with BYU, Wilton helped lead them to the MPSF championship in 2013, as well as the NCAA finals in that same year.
Wilton was the head coach for the University of Hawaii men’s team from 1992 to 2009 where he amassed a record of 316-167 (.654). He led the Warriors to three Final Four appearances including one National Championship in 2002. He was named the Volleyball Magazine National Coach of the Year twice, once in 1995 and once in 2002, and the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 2002. He helped 16 athletes garner 26 all-America honors and two players earned National Player of the Year awards.
Before his time at UH, Wilton was the head women’s coach at Cal Poly from 1978-1989. While at Cal Poly, Wilton led the team to 10 straight Division I National Tournaments including three NCAA regional semi finalist finishes and four NCAA regional finals appearances. Wilton was the Big West Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1989 and helped 13 athletes garner 23 All-America honors. He also led the Mustangs to four top-five National final rankings and finished with a record of 292-137 (.680). Wilton is currently a member of the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame.
Wilton has a combined career record of 608-304 (.667), one of the best winning percentages in NCAA history.
Wilton received his Bachelor of Science degree from BYU-Hawaii in 1972 where he majored in physical education and coaching. He would later receive his Master of Science degree from BYU in 1977 in physical education and administration.
