Southern Utah Falls at Home to BYU, 72-39

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Nov. 24 - Southern Utah women's basketball was down early and was unable to recover as the Brigham Young Cougars handed the Thunderbirds a 72-39 loss at home on Tuesday night. The loss drops SUU to 0-4 to start the year while BYU moves to 3-1.

Southern Utah surrendered the first shot of the game as BYU's Kristen Riley hit a layup to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. The margin grew to 20 less than nine minutes later as SUU struggled with the full-court Cougar press, suffering six turnovers and turning in only three field goals to make the game 27-7.

The Thunderbirds began to chip away at the lead later in the half, pulling to within 15 (29-14) as Dani Hosking put in a free throw to punctuate the three-point play. However, BYU countered with a run of its own and took a 48-24 lead into the half.

The Cougars held the advantage throughout the second half with the game getting only as close as 23 (53-30) following a Jadie Parsons 3-pointer. BYU's Alexis Kaufusi's jumper at 1:28 capped the scoring as the final whistle blew with the score of 72-39.

Tayler Anderson led the Thunderbirds with ten points while Kaufusi led all players with game highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Southern Utah will now prepare to play at the Wingate Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by Montana State University this weekend. The T-Birds will play the Bobcats on Friday night to open the tournament and then will advance to play either Utah Valley or Winthrop on Saturday night.
