Southern Utah gymnastics will look to remain undefeated on the season when the Thunderbirds host the Kent State Golden Flashes on Saturday night in the Centrum Arena. SUU will also have a pair of other streaks on the line as Elise Wheeler and Melissa Johnson have captured individual titles in the all-around and vault, respectively, in each of the T-Birds' meets this season.
“Kent State is a very good team and has a very good coach,” head coach Scott Bauman said. “It will be a great battle in the all-around with Wheeler and Kent State's Christina Lenny, both are just great competitors.”
Southern Utah will enter the meet with a perfect 5-0 mark after beginning the year with victories over BYU, Utah State, Sacramento State, Cal State Fullerton and San Jose State.
Wheeler and Johnson have paced the team with titles in the all-around and vault in each of the meets this season and have tallied several conference weekly awards in the process. Johnson has recorded the top mark of the season for the Thunderbirds with matching 9.900's on vault over the past two meets.
Southern Utah and Kent State have never met on the gymnastics' floor. The Kent State golden Flashes are the defending MAC champions with Lenny qualifying for the 2009 NCAA National Championships in the all-around.
The meet is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will kick start SUU's “Thunderbirds United for Food” campaign, aimed at raising food for the local food bank. Fans can receive reduced admission to the meet by bringing non-perishable food items.

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Jan. 30 - Southern Utah women's gymnastics completed its weekend road trip in California by secure its third Western Athletic Conference victory with a 194.925-193.300 win over the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday night. SUU gymnasts swept all but one individual title during the night as Elise Wheeler and Melissa Johnson continued their streaks of consecutive titles.
