TULSA, Okla. - Southern
Utah University had four players score in double figures in a 115-75 defeat at
Oral Roberts University Monday evening. Sophomore forward Chanel Thorley came
off the bench to record her first career double-double with a career-high 17
points and 11 rebounds for the Thunderbirds.
Southern Utah saw its record fall to 10-8
overall and 4-3 in conference while ORU improved to 12-7 overall and 8-0 in
Summit League play.
Senior forward Challis Pascucci scored a
team-high 19 points while freshman Desiree Jackson added 13 points and senior
guard Caitlyn Sears chipped in with 11 rebounds. Sears, sophomore forward
Tayler Anderson and freshman forward Carli Moreland each grabbed eight rebounds.
Southern Utah owned a 56-50 rebound advantage but ORU forced 25 SUU turnovers
and received 41 trips to the free throw line while shooting 50% to keep a
perfect record in conference play.
The Thunderbirds used outstanding play from
Pascucci and great ball movement in the opening minutes to break ORU's pressing
defense. SUU withstood some early pressure by the Golden Eagles before senior
point guard Kaila Goff and Jackson made some nice passes through the ORU press
and found Pascucci who scored 14 of SUU's first 18 points to give the Thunderbirds
an 18-15 lead at the 13:17 mark. Pascucci had a couple layups while getting
fouled and knocked down her free throws, forcing ORU to take a couple timeouts
to stop the SUU momentum.
The timeouts proved to be effective as ORU
benefitted from a number of calls following the timeouts as Pascucci was
quickly whistled for two fouls, forcing her to the bench with the pair of
fouls. ORU capitalized with Pascucci on bench as Golden Eagles 6'5" center
Amber Carver went on to score 12 points and ORU forward Savanna Buck added 13
point from the low post as the Thunderbird low post players were plagued by
foul trouble throughout the first half.
Following a layup by Sears that made it a
20-20 ball game at the 11:24 mark, ORU went on to outscore SUU 40-17 the rest
of the half, including 20-3 run over a four-minute stretch to pull away from
the young Thunderbirds.
The Golden Eagles continued their hot
shooting the second half with a 48% mark in the second half and forcing 11 more
SUU turnovers to open up the big lead an never look back. SUU shot 37% from the
floor in the second half.
ORU was led by reigning Summit League Player
of the Year Kevi Luper who caught fire in the second half before finishing with
a game-high 29 points before she exited with just over two minutes remaining.
SUU also had freshman Angel Dorn finish with
seven points and fellow freshman DJ Norman dish out three assists in the second
half.
The Thunderbirds return home to host IUPUI at
5 p.m. on Saturday before welcoming Western Illinois University to the Centrum
Arena next Monday night at 7 p.m.
