Southern Utah Falls at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Oreg. Nov. 20 – Southern Utah University continued its season opening road trip with a visit to Oregon State Sunday. The T-Birds were unable to keep pace with the Beavers who held the SUU offense in check on their way to a 90-40 win.

Oregon State jumped out to a 12-0 lead to start the game after going six-of-six from the floor and forcing the T-Birds into four turnovers during their first five possessions. Sophomore forward Carli Moreland would then open the scoring for SUU as her jumper found the bottom of the net to make the score 12-2.

The Beavers held the T-Birds scoreless over the next four minutes until Hailey Mandelko hit a shot from outside to cut the deficit to 18-5. OSU followed the basket with a 12-0 run to stretch their lead to 25 at 30-5. The Beavers continued to score at a steady pace throughout the remainder of the first half, stretching their lead to as many as 34 points, and eventually took a 46-15 advantage into the locker room.

Forward Earlysia Marchbanks carried the brunt of the load for the home team early on, finishing the first half with 10 points on 4-7 shooting. As a team the Beavers would shoot over 56 percent from the floor in the opening period.

The T-Birds opened the second half scoring three straight points on a free throw by Moreland and a DJ Norman jumper to make the score 48-18. The SUU offense improved significantly in the second period, upping its field goal percentage to nearly 40 percent and making 12 trips to the free throw line. They were unable to keep pace with the Beavers however who steadily increased the margin over the final 20 and ultimately claimed a 90-40 victory.

Oregon State showed a balanced scoring attack throughout the game and had three players finish in the double-digits as Marchbanks put up 13, Alyssa Martin had 10 and Thais Pinto came off the bench for 11. Moreland, Marquelle Funk, Torey Hill, Brenna Gates and Kimie Hawkins each scored five for SUU.

With the win the Beavers maintain their perfect record and improve to 4-0. The T-Birds are off to an 0-3 start on the year with all three losses coming on the road. Next week SUU will travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico to compete in the Aggie Hotel Encanto Thanksgiving Classic. The Thunderbirds are scheduled to face North Dakota on Friday at 6:00 p.m. followed by a matchup with tournament host New Mexico State on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
