SUU Softball Posts a Pair of Run-Rule Victories

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University softball used a pair of huge second innings on Friday afternoon to post run-rule victories of 10-0 and 8-0 against South Dakota State. The Thunderbirds scored seven runs in the second frame in game 1 and six runs in game 2 to propel the team to the wins.

SUU opened the scoring in game 1 in the first inning on a two-run home run by Mikkel Griffin and then used seven runs on five hits and two SDSU errors in the second to build a 9-0 lead. Tessa Loewen, Terysa Dyer, Madison Resley and Haylee Hoch picked up the RBI in the inning with Dyer notching the majority on a bases loaded three-run double.

Southern Utah's final run came in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Hoch as the senior tallied her second RBI of the day.

Heather Black stymied the Jackrabbit offense during the game, allowing only two hits in five innings with no walks and three strikeouts to pick up the win. Black returned in game two and was even better, allowing only a single hit in four innings with one walk and six strikeouts. Danielle Axe came on to throw the final inning for SUU, allowing two hits in the top of the fifth.

The hits proved to be nothing of consequence as the Thunderbirds scored six runs on five hits and one Jackrabbit error in the second. A triple by Kadi Henderson created Southern Utah's first scoring opportunity in the frame as the sophomore advanced to home on a passed ball. An RBI single by Gurski, a two-run double by Griffin, an RBI single by Kelsey Bryant and a wild pitch accounted for the rest of the T-Bird runs in the frame.

Southern Utah capped the victory with an RBI single by Loewen in the third and an RBI single by Gurski in the bottom of the fourth. The Thunderbirds threatened most of the game, ultimately ending the contest having stranded nine runners on base.

The two teams will meet in the series finale tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. Fans can follow the game via a live stat link that is anticipated to be available online at www.suutbirds.com or listen to a live radio stream at www.power91radio.com.
