Scouting Southeastern Louisiana

Southeastern Louisiana was picked first in the Southland in both the coach and sports information director's preseason poll this season. The Lions are the defending SLC championships, going a perfect 7-0 in conference last season.

SELA opened 2014 with a resounding 44-3 victory over Jacksonville with 233 yards rushing and 331 yards passing. Quarterback Bryan Bennett passed for over 300 yards (311) and ran for almost 100 yards (93) en route to a three touchdown effort with two in the air and one on an 83-yard scramble.

The Lions' defense held Jacksonville to 222 total yards, including 68 on the ground and 154 in the air. Isiah Corbett led the team with seven tackles, including 2.0 for loss and six solo stops.

Head coach Ron Roberts is in his third year with Southeastern Louisiana, leading the Lions to an overall mark of 16-9 and a Southland Conference title last season.

Last Week

Southern Utah's defense was on the field for almost 41 minutes as the University of Nevada came away with a 28-19 victory over the Thunderbirds in Reno, Nev.

The Thunderbirds used a pair of quarterbacks in Aaron Cantu (20-31-0, 197 yds) and Ammon Olsen (5-10-1, 27 yds), looking for the right combination on offense. Cantu recorded a 39-yard touchdown to Chris Robinson and Raysean Pringle dashed for a 71-yard touchdown for Southern Utah's offensive touchdowns.

Chinedu Ahanonu recorded 28 tackles on the day, setting a Big Sky Conference record and Miles Killebrew returned an 85-yard interception for a touchdown, providing the highlights for the defense.

Looking Ahead

Southern Utah will return home for Homecoming and the 2014 home opener when the Thunderbirds host South Dakota State on Sept. 13.

Against the Southland

Southern Utah has faced Southland opponents nine times since joining the FCS ranks in 1993. The Thunderbirds have an overall mark of 2-7 with both wins coming against McNeese State.
