Box Score CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah dropped to Weber State in the annual Beehive Bowl after the Wildcats rallied for a 23-point fourth quarter.
“Big rivalry game. Tough game to swallow. We made some bad decisions in the fourth quarter, and it costed us the game,” head coach Demario Warren said. “I'm really disappointed, but we're going to get better and move forward.”
Raysean Pringle led the Thunderbirds' rushing game, running eight times for 85 yards. Patrick Tyler threw 20-25-0 for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Sharp led the receivers, catching five times for 90 yards and one touchdown.
Patrick Tyler punched in a 19-yard TD on the opening drive of the game to give the Thunderbirds an early lead over the Wildcats before Tyler connected with Isaiah Diego-Williams on a 37-yard pass to mark a 14-0 lead to round out the first quarter.
Weber State posted its first touchdown of the night a few minutes into the second quarter before Josh Thornton returned WSU's blocked PAT. Tyler found Sharp on a 55-yard pass to round out the first half scoring and give the Thunderbirds a 23-6 edge over the Wildcats.
WSU's Jadrian Clark found Cam Livingston early in the third quarter to cut the gap before SUU answered as Tyler punched in a TD. The Thunderbirds posted one last touchdown in the third quarter as Raysean Pringle rushed for a 36-yard touchdown.
The Thunderbirds fell apart in the final quarter, and the Wildcats took advantage. Weber State posted three touchdowns and a safety to take its first lead of the game in the final minute and capture the 37-36 rivalry victory. WSU's final touchdown came with just 31 seconds to play as Clark connected with Darryl Denby for a 40-yard touchdown pass.
“We were up by three possessions. We did it to ourselves. We can't blame anyone but ourselves,” Mike Needham said. “We just have to move on.”
Tate Lewis kicked six times for 300 yards, including a long of 70 yards. Kyle Hannemann led defensively with 10 tackles, eight solo and two assisted.
The Thunderbirds are back in action as they travel to Pocatello, Idaho to take on Idaho State on Oct. 29 at 2:35 p.m.
