CEDAR CITY, Utah - With a win under their belt and two weeks of Big Sky Conference competition behind them, the Thunderbird women's basketball team is gearing up for a rivalry contest against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. Â
Previously On Lady T-Bird Basketball
The Thunderbirds picked up their first Big Sky victory of the season last week, as they knocked off the Bengals of Idaho State 76-70. The win also broke a nine game losing streak for the T-Birds. Â
Sophomore point guard Rebecca Cardenas was the catalyst for Southern Utah in the contest, scoring 17 points, pulling down seven rebounds, dishing out five assists and recording four steals.
Cardenas only sat two minutes of the entire game.
Breanu Reid poured in 15 points and Whitney Johnson finished with 13 in the contest.
Two nights later the T-Birds fell to the Weber State Wildcats. Â
Stat Leaders
Through 15 games, Reid is leading the Thunderbirds in scoring average with 12.7 ppg. She's scored 191 points in total.
Both Natalie Sanchez and Whitney Johnson are scoring at an average of 10.1 ppg.
Cardenas leads the team in assists with 69, and steals with 43. When it comes to the big Sky, she's fourth in the league in assists and third in steals.
Scouting Report: Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (4-11, 1-3 Big Sky)
The Lumberjacks of NAU will head to Cedar City with one Big Sky Conference victory that came against the Weber State Wildcats. The Lumberjacks started Big Sky play with a 70-62 overtime loss to Montana, and have also been topped by Montana State and Idaho State.
Kenna McDavis leads the Lumberjacks in scoring average this season, putting up 16.2 ppg. McDavis also leads the team in rebounding with 9.6, putting her very close to averaging a double-double.
Olivia Lucero averages 15.3 ppg, and Kaleigh Paplow is putting up an average of 11.5 ppg.
Loree Payne is in her first season as the head coach of Northern Arizona, and came in as the 12th coach the program has had in that role.
