SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif -- The Thunderbird football team wrapped up their 2018 campaign on Saturday evening in California, as they fell to the Mustangs of Cal Poly 38-24.
With the loss the T-Birds will finish the season with a 1-10 overall record, and a 1-7 mark in the Big Sky Conference. Cal Poly finished the year 5-6 and 4-4 in Big Sky play. Â
"We're good, we've got a lot of talented guys that want to fight and we can play with a lot of teams in the Big Sky, we're just not good enough," SUU head coach Demario Warren said following the contest. "I didn't get the team to the point we needed to get this year and that's frustrating. But there's a lot of reflection that needs to go on in the next few weeks and we need to make sure we start grinding again and make sure we get back to where we want to be." Â Â
The Thunderbirds struck on their first drive of the first quarter, as freshman Karris Davis ran the ball in from 28-yards away to put the T-Birds up 7-0.
SUU continued its success later in the first quarter, as they capped a 14-play, 96-yard drive with a nine-yard pass from Tyler Skidmore to McCoy Hill to put the Thunderbirds up 14-0.
SUU held a 14-0 lead after the opening quarter.
Fairly early on in the second period the Mustangs got on the board with a 46-yard touchdown through the air which cut into the Thunderbird lead. Cal Poly scored on their next drive as well to tie up the contest.
On SUU's next drive the T-Birds went 75 yards in 14 plays to retake the lead 21-14 thanks to a Jay Green Jr. touchdown run.
With 1:36 left in the opening half the Mustangs tied the contest back up at 21-21, and despite a late push down the field by SUU, that would remain the score at the break.
The Mustangs struck on their opening drive of the second half to go up 28-21 in the contest. That would be the only score of the third quarter.
The Thunderbirds were able to add a field goal in the fourth quarter, but that was it and the Mustangs ran away with the contest 38-24.
Throughout the contest Chinedu Ahanonu moved into fourth on SUU's list of All-Time Total Tackles list as he finished his career with 344. In his final game as a T-Bird Taylor Nelson finished with 19 total tackles.
