Montana State Tops Thunderbirds In Big Sky Opener

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- In their first Big Sky Conference contest of the 2018-19 season, the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah fell to the Bobcats of Montana State 92-62 inside the America First Event Center.

"We came out and faced a little adversity, and didn't have enough tonight," SUU head coach Todd Simon said. "We weren't able to make enough shots and I think that impacted us defensively, which is something we'll have to rectify. We'll get back to the drawing board, the schedule comes fast now."

The contest swung Montana State's way early, as they jumped out to an early 10-0 lead. The run was eventually broke by a triple from Jacob Calloway.

After a 9-0 from MSU, Calloway hit a layup to again end the streak.

Of Southern Utah's first 12 points, Calloway had 10 to keep the offense afloat.

The Bobcats built their lead to as many as 21 in the opening half, and took a 46-30 lead into the break. Calloway had 14 at the half to lead SUU.

Despite cutting the MSU lead to 13 on multiple occasions, the result of the second half was very similar to the first as the Bobcats outscored the T-Birds 46-32 and pulled away with a 92-62 victory.

Calloway ended the contest as the team's leading scorer with 18. Cameron Oluyitan dumped in 14. Both Calloway and Oluyitan led the team in rebounds with eight.

The Thunderbirds shot just 37 percent in the contest, while the Bobcats shot 50 percent.

The T-Birds will be back in the America First Event Center on Monday as they'll host the defending Big Sky Conference Champions, Montana.
