LOGAN, Utah - Southern Utah senior Karen Gonzalez has been named MRGC Beam Specialist of the Week and sophomore Becky Rozsa has been named Co-MRGC Bars Specialist of the Week following their performances against BYU.
Gonzalez set a new career high and moved into second place in the SUU record book when she stuck a 9.950 on beam Friday night. That score was not the highest beam score in the MRGC in week five, it was the highest beam score recorded all season within the conference.
"I was just thinking 'I got this. I do this every day in practice.' We've been doing a lot of beam routines in practice so that really helped with my confidence going into the routine," Gonzalez said.
Rozsa also set a new career high against the Cougars, scoring a 9.875 on bars. Her score helped lead the Flippin' Birds to a team score of 49.175 on the event. That score tied her with BYU's Shannon Hortman Evans and Boise State's Ann Stockwell for the weekly award.
This is the first weekly award of the season for either gymnast and the first of both of their careers.
The Flippin' Birds will return to the floor in just two days when they host Utah State on February 12 in the AFEC.
