Flippin’ Birds Edged Out By Utah State at Home

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Flippin' Bird gymnastics team competed in their second meet in four days on Monday evening, as they fell to the Utah State Aggies 195.275-195.200 inside the America First Event Center.

"I'm still seeing growth in our all-arounds like Autumn and Madison McBride. I loved what I saw on vault and I'm starting to really like what I'm seeing on bars, head coach Scotty Bauman said. "I could not be more pleased with how the McBride twins vaulted. The errors that we are making on bars are not from being timid or holding back, but from attacking bars."

Megan McBride and Molly Jozwiakowski led the way for the Thunderbirds on vault, as they both scored a 9.825. The result was Jozwiakowski's first event championship as a T-Bird. Madison McBride scored a 9.800, with Morgan Alfaro and Autumn Jorgensen both scoring a 9.775 to round out SUU's scoring on the event.

"It felt really good to finally put it all together and just go out and do what I do in practice every day," Jozwiakowski said. "I feel a lot more confident now and getting in the groove of meet after meet has made me more confident in my gymnastics as a whole."

On bars, senior Karen Gonzalez led the charge with a 9.825. Madison Howlett, Becky Rozsa and Kirsten Yee all received a 9.800 for their efforts on the event.

On beam, Mary Packham (9.825) and Autumn Jorgensen (9.800) had SUU's top two scores on beam. Unfortunately for the T-Birds, they had to count a 9.150 on the event and scored a 48.175 on the event.

Autumn Jorgensen notched a 9.900 on floor for the Thunderbirds, which was the top score on the night on any event for the T-Birds. Madison McBride scored a 9.875, and Jozwiakowski hit a 9.825 to continue the T-Bird success on the event.

Jorgensen was the lone all-around competitor, and scored a 39.150.

"This is a nasty team to compete against when they are going on all eight cylinders, but we have to get them all there," Bauman said. "We still have information to process and we still have a lot of work to do."

The Thunderbirds will be back in action on Friday, as they travel to Provo to take on the Brigham Young University Cougars.
