CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Heading to Oregon and California, the Thunderbird women's basketball team will be taking on Portland State University and Sacramento State to wrap up their games on the road.
Last Time Out: University of Northern Colorado & University of North Dakota
The Thunderbirds took a tough loss against the University of Northern Colorado, Sanchez was the leading scorer for the T-Birds, matching her career-high with 20 points. She also had three steals on the day. Larsen finished with 16 points and four rebounds. Whitney Johnson led all rebounders in the game with 13.
Against North Dakota, Whitney Johnson had herself a night, posting her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Natalie Sanchez had eight points with four rebounds and two steals in her first game since January 27. Despite these performances, the T-Birds fell to the Fighting Hawks.
Scouting Report: Portland State University (14-11, 8-6 BSC)
Southern Utah's last match up with Portland State was last season, where they fell 81-74. Currently, the Vikings are 14-11 with a young team seven of 13 rostered players being underclassmen.
On the offensive, Sidney Rielly is averaging 17 points per game on the season followed by Ashley Bolston and Kiana Brown with 15.2 and 12 points per game.
Courtney West and Tatiana Streun record the highest marks of average rebounds per game with 8.3 and 5.4 respectively.
Lynn Kennedy enters his third season as head coach at Portland State in 2017-18. He is accompanied by Chelsey Zimmerman, Amy Denson, Keithan Gregg, and Carly Meister.
Scouting Report: Sacramento State (5-20, 3-11 BSC)
The last encounter with the Sacramento State Hornets was during the 2016-17 season which resulted in a loss for the Thunderbirds 69-81.
For the Hornets, their offensive powers are Hannah Friend averaging 18 points per game, Maranne Johnson averaging 15.1 points per game and Dana DeGraffenreid with 10.2 points per game, all of which average more than 26 minutes per game.
On the defensive end, Kennedy Nicholas and Hannah Friend mark an average of 7 rebounds per game with senior guard Maranne Johnson averaging 2.6 steals per game.
Head coach Bunky Harkleroad completed his fourth season at Sacramento State in 2016-17 with another record-breaking year leading the Hornet women's basketball program. He is assisted by assistant coaches Derrick Florence, Bill Baxter, Jessica Kunisaki, and team manager Kelli Robinson.
