Southern Utah to Host Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championship Meet

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah Flippin' Birds will host the Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Championship meet this Saturday March 24 in the America First Event Center.

Last Time Out

Last week the Flippin' Birds wrapped up the regular season by taking on the Utah State Aggies in a road meet in Logan. The Thunderbirds scored a 195.750, however, the Aggies put up their highest score of the season and defeated SUU with a 196.500.

Autumn Jorgensen claimed the all-around event title with a combined score of 39.325. The sophomore also set a career-high on bars with a 9.850. Mary Packham also set a new career-high at the meet, scoring a 9.850 on beam.

Locked In

With the 195.750 that they scored last Friday, the Flippin' Birds were able to secure a spot in the NCAA Regional Championships. The team raised their Regional Qualifying Score to 195.915 which mathematically locked them into the regional meet.

The Thunderbirds will find out where they will be headed during the NCAA Gymnastics selection show which will take place on Monday March 26 at 2:00 p.m. Mountain time.

Scouting Report: MRGC Conference

For the second year in a row, the MRGC will open conference championship week with at least two top-20 ranked teams. No. 15 Boise State and No. 20 BYU will be making the trip down to Cedar City Saturday along with No. 38 Utah State as they compete for a conference title. The host Thunderbirds are ranked No. 31 in the nation with their RQS of 195.915.

All four teams have posted over a 196.000 this season with the low being Utah State's 196.500 last week and the high being Boise State's 197.000 which also came last week in a tri-meet with Washington and BYU. Southern Utah's high score of 196.800, the second highest in school history, came against BYU on Februrary 9 and BYU posted their high score of 196.625 on Februrary 16 in a tri-meet with SUU and Denver.

The Boise State Broncos are the reigning MRGC champions after winning the title in three straight years (2015-2017).

Meet Info

Saturday's championship meet will start at 6:00 p.m. inside the America First Event Center. Doors to the AFEC will open to fans at 5:00 p.m. Fans of each team are encouraged to sit together, however, tickets are general admission so seats are first come, first serve.

A live stream of the meet will be available on PlutoTV channels 200 & 201. All four events will be streamed throughout the meet, with two events on one channel and the other two on the other channel. Live stats will be available at suutbirds.com.
