Box Score LOS ANGELES - The Southern Utah softball team opened play at Loyola Marymount University Friday with losses to Florida Gulf Coast University and Harvard University.
Game One: SUU 1, FGCU 10
Things stayed pretty quiet on the offensive side for both teams at the beginning of game one. The Eagles scored a run on a RBI single in the first inning, but the score stayed 1-0 into the 4th inning.
FGCU broke things open in the fourth and fifth innings with three home runs over the two innings. They had taken a 6-0 lead by the end of the fifth.
The Thunderbirds got on the board in the top of the sixth inning as Kalei Watkins opened the inning with a single to left field, moved around the bases, and scored on a RBI fielder's choice from Nicole Simonson.
The Eagles would go on to score four more runs in the bottom half of the inning, including a three run home run that ended the game in the sixth.
Game Two: SUU 3, Harvard 11
The Thunderbirds couldn't slow down the Harvard offense in game two as the Crimson scored in every inning except for the third.
They jumped out to a 4-0 by the middle of the second inning.
The Thunderbirds were able to cut their lead in half as Makenzie Ball hit a RBI double in the bottom half of the second and Kendall Kapitzke hit one of her own in the third to make it 4-2 Crimson.
Harvard extended their lead over the next two innings, making it 11-2 by the fifth inning.
Taylei Williams hit an RBI triple in the Southern Utah half of the fifth inning, but it wouldn't be enough to keep the game alive as the Thunderbirds fell 11-3.
Sarah Murphy had two hits and two runs scored in her return to the field for Southern Utah.
The Thunderbirds will continue play in the Golden State tomorrow against Providence College and LMU.
