ST GEORGE, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team opened the Red Desert Classic in St. George Friday afternoon with back-to-back losses to CSU Bakersfield and No. 24 Baylor University.
Kendall Kapitzke and Samantha Guerra had two hits each on the day, with all four coming against the Roadrunners. Guerra had two RBIs in the game and Kapitzke picked up one and scored a run.
The Roadrunners got off to a hot start in game one, putting up nine runs in the first three innings. Mikelle Magalogo hit her first home run as a Thunderbird in the second inning to get SUU on the board. Southern Utah chipped away starting in the fourth inning scoring two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
Against the Bears, Hannah Wynn pitched seven innings and gave up five runs. All five of Baylor's runs came on two home runs, a three-run shot and a two-run shot. Outside of the home runs, Wynn gave up just four hits and pitched five scoreless innings while striking out two Bears.
The Thunderbirds only had two hits in the game, both coming in the third inning when Hannah Williams led off with a single and came home on a double by Madison Tuft.
The Thunderbirds will continue play in the tournament tomorrow against Utah State at 12:00 p.m. and Notre Dame at 2:30 p.m.
