RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Southern Utah softball team opened play at a tournament hosted by UC Riverside Friday afternoon with a 4-5 loss to Northern Kentucky and a 2-11 six inning loss to the host Highlanders.
Madison Tuft had five hits on the day, three against the Norse and two against the Highlanders, to finish the day 5-for-7. She also scored a run in each game and had a RBI against NKU. Dream Weaver and Mikelle Magalogo both had three hits on the day, two in game one and one in game two. Weaver scored three times and Magalogo had two RBIs.
Down 5-0, the Thunderbirds chipped away in game one until they were able to pull within one run in the seventh inning, but couldn't get the last run across to tie things up. Hanna Wynn pitched five innings in relief in the game and gave up just one run.
The Thunderbirds will continue play tomorrow with another game against NKU. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. Mountain time.
