LINCOLN, Neb. - The Southern Utah gymnastics team opened a five-meet road stretch Saturday night with a 195.050-196.825 loss to the No. 18 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Freshman Karley McClain earned the title of Vault Event Champion at the conclusion of the meet for having the best vault of the night on either team. McClain was awarded a 9.875, a new career high for her. She finished the night with her third-highest all-around score this season, a 39.150.
The Flippin' Birds' best event of the night came on bars, where they scored a 49.075 as a team. Shylen Murakami and Stephanie Tervort led the way, both earning 9.850's, a new career high for Tervort. Becky Rozsa-Thompson and Autumn Jorgensen both were awarded 9.800's and McClain rounded out the scoring with a 9.775.
They had their second-highest score of the night on vault, where McClain earned the highest score. Tervort and Morgan Alfaro both got 9.800's and Molly Jozwiakowski got a 9.750. Rachel Smith and Caitlin Kho both earned 9.725's.
Jozwiakowski had the highest score on floor for the Thunderbirds, scoring a 9.850. McClain earned a 9.825 and Madison McBride scored a 9.700. On beam, Hannah Nipp had the best routine of the night for the Flippin' Birds, earning a 9.800.
The Flippin' Birds will travel to two meets next weekend, competing in Logan, Utah against Utah State on Friday March 8 and in Seattle, Washington against the University of Washington on Sunday March 10.
