GREELEY, Colo. - The Southern Utah women's basketball team closed out the 2018-19 regular season Thursday night with a 88-71 road loss to Northern Colorado. The loss moved the Thunderbirds to 7-22 overall and 4-16 in Big Sky play with at least one game left to play.
Rebecca Cardenas was the leading scorer for the Thunderbirds with 17 points. The junior was 5-for-6 from three-point range while also pulling in five rebounds and dishing out four assists. Three other Thunderbirds finished in double-digits as Jessica Chatman had 14, Breanu Reid had 13, and Megan Kamps finished with 11 points.
After getting down, by six early, the Thunderbirds were able to keep the Bears from pulling away for much of the first half. They cut the Bears' lead down to just one multiple times in the first quarter, but were never able to take the lead themselves.
The Bears pushed their lead all the way to as much as 11 in the second quarter, but a 12-5 run by the T-Birds made it 26-30. They would go into halftime trailing 33-40.
The Bears really began to pull away in the second half outscoring the Thunderbirds 21-18 in the third quarter and 27-20 in the fourth quarter. However, as a team, Southern Utah played a much better half in the second than in the first. They shot 48.4 percent from the field including an impressive 62.5 percent from three.
It wouldn't be enough however, as the Bears had an answer for seemingly everything and took the 88-71 win.
The T-Birds will now wait to see who they will face in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Tournament, with most teams still having one game left to play on Saturday. The first round of the tournament will take place on Monday, March 11 in Boise, Idaho.
