CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team dropped their final doubleheader of the season Saturday afternoon to the Montana Grizzlies, losing game one 6-4 and game two 15-7 in five innings.
Makall Whetten and Samantha Guerra both had three hits on the day, with Whetten coming around to score three times. Madison Carr went 2-for-4 in game one and Makenzie Ball went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored in game two.
The Griz jumped on the Thunderbirds early in both games, scoring four runs in the first inning of game one and eight runs in the first inning of game two. They scored all six of their runs in game one in the first two innings, building a 6-0 lead early.
The Thunderbirds chipped away, scoring one run in the third and three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run home run from Hannah Williams. They wouldn't be able to score any more runs in the final three innings however, picking up just two hits during that time.
After scoring eight in the first in game two, the Griz built up to a 13-0 lead by the time their half of the third inning was over. The Thunderbirds were able to put together two solid innings in the third and fourth, scoring seven runs behind Ball's three RBIs and a two-run home run from Mikelle Magalogo.
However, a Montana two-run home run in the fourth gave them the runs they needed to run rule the Thunderbirds.
With the two losses, Southern Utah has been eliminated from the Big Sky Championship Tournament. They will play their final game of the season tomorrow as they host the Griz for the series finale at noon.
