RECAP | McClain and McBride Set New Career Floor Records in the Thunderbirds Loss Against the Huskers
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Flippin' Birds' gymnastics team opened their 2020 season by narrowly falling to the No. 15 Nebraska Huskers 196.375 - 195.275.Â
Southern Utah's Karley McClain won the all-around title, posting 9.950 on floor, 9.900 on beam and 9.700 on both vault and bars for a total of 39.25.Â
"You could tell that this was our first meet of the season; we had some jitters," said head coach Scott Bauman. "But the crowd and support from Cedar City during the final rotation was fantastic. They pulled our floor routines through and made it so nice to end the afternoon on a high note. I can't thank our community enough."Â
The Thunderbirds scored their highest on floor, earning a 49.400. McClain posted SUU's best with a 9.950, which is a new floor personal career record for her. Madison McBride followed with another floor personal career record of her own at 9.900.Â
Vault was the T-Birds second strongest rotation with a score of 49.100. SUU's highest scores came from junior Morgan Alfaro (9.875), senior Madison McBride (9.850), and sophomore Caitlin Kho (9.850).Â
McClain and Shylen Murakami were the Thunderbirds best beam performers of the afternoon as McClain posted a 9.900 and Murakami was a awarded a 9.825. The team finished beam with a score of 48.775.Â
Murakami was SUU's best bar athlete as she received a 9.825, followed by Hannah Nipp who earned a 9.775. The Flippin' Birds finished the rotation with a total of 48.000.Â

The Southern Utah Gymnastics team is set to compete in the Rio Tinto Best of Utah meet this Saturday, January 11, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. inside the Maverik Center. Statistics for this meet will be available at UtahUtes.com
