CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Thunderbird men's basketball team secured their first victory of the 2020-21 season on Saturday afternoon, as they knocked off the Saint Katherine Firebirds 95-47 inside the America First Event Center.
"I was proud of the guys," SUU head coach Todd Simon said. "We've talked about working on our process, because this thing is a marathon and we want to continue to get better. We've got newcomers that we're integrating in the system and I thought we saw great progress in terms of how we do things from game one to game two."
The wire-to-wire victory started off on a 10-0 run for Southern Utah, and they didn't look back from there.
Tevian Jones led the offensive effort for the Thunderbirds, scoring 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting. He was also a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the three-point line. He did all that in under 20 minutes of playing time. In his first two appearances as a Thunderbird, Jones has 39 total points under his belt.
Dre Marin scored 15 points for the Thunderbirds. John Knight III had 12 points and 6 assists in the contest. Over the first two games, Knight III has 16 total assists for Southern Utah.
Harrison Butler (11) and Maizen Fausett (10) were the other two T-Birds that scored in double figures. Butler and Marquis Moore led the team's rebounding effort with seven each.
Southern Utah outscored the Firebirds 48-16 in terms of bench points, and took advantage of their turnovers by scoring 28 points off St. Katherine's mistakes.
The Thunderbirds will now turn their attention to Big Sky Conference play, as they'll host the Montana Grizzlies as their first weekend doubleheader next Thursday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (12 p.m.).
