CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Southern Utah Thunderbird men's basketball team secured their sixth victory in a row on Friday evening, as they knocked off the Bethesda Flames 98-64 inside the America First Event Center.
With the win, the Thunderbirds have matched the 2000-01 team's record for most consecutive regular season victories at six. This count does not include conference tournament games and is for SUU's Division I era.
The Thunderbirds are now 6-1 on the season with a 2-0 mark in Big Sky Conference play.
"It was a good game for us to get a lot of guys in," SUU head coach Todd Simon said. "We used a lot of different combinations deep in the bench to get some mileage on some guys."
Southern Utah struggled in the opening half, only holding a 36-33 following the first 20 minutes.
"We came out too lazy, and we've got to come to the game prepared," John Knight III said following the contest. "We took this game lightly, and we learned our lesson."
The second half was a much different story, as the Thunderbirds came alive after the break to outscore the Flames 62-31.
Tevian Jones led the scoring effort, securing a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. His rebounding number was a new career high.
Knight III had 11 points, with Nick Fleming and Harrison Butler both adding 10 points to the total. Fleming's 10 points was also a career-high.
Maizen Fausett had nine points and eight rebounds in 15 minutes of work.
Southern Utah outrebounded the Flames 59-31, and took advantage by outscoring them by 30 in terms of second chance points.
The Thunderbirds had 60 points in the paint during the contest, compared to Bethesda's 20.
Southern Utah University will wrap up it's non-conference slate on Monday afternoon, as they square off against the same Bethesda Flame squad at 12 p.m. MT inside the America First Event Center.
