Thunderbirds Blow Out Trailblazers In First Matchup as Division I Foes

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team bounced back from their loss to BYU on Friday with a 80-44 blowout of Dixie State in the first Division I matchup between the two teams.

"It was a great team win for us," SUU head coach Tracy Sanders said. "It was fun to see some different lineups in there, and going into christmas break and conference play it was a great win to end on."

Darri Frandsen and Madelyn Eaton led the Thunderbirds in scoring with 15 points each. The duo also shot a combined 4-for-5 from the three-point line. Frandsen pulled down seven rebounds and had two blocks on the night. Margarita Satini and Daylani Ballena both had career nights in scoring as Satini put up nine and Ballena put up six.

As a team, the Thunderbirds held the Trailblazers to just 26.4 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded them 51-32. Eleven different Thunderbirds scored points in the game as every T-Bird saw at least three minutes of playing time.

The Thunderbirds led for almost the entire game, jumping on Dixie State right from the beginning. With 3:19 left to play in the first quarter, they had already built a 10-point lead and pushed it up to 15 points by the end of the quarter behind 10 first-quarter points from Frandsen.

The T-Birds continued to pile it on in the second quarter, leading 40-15 with 3:08 to play in the first half.

By the end of the first half, the Thunderbirds had built up a 42-24 lead. Frandsen had 12 points and Eaton had 10 in just the first 20 minutes of play.

Southern Utah came out and put on a defensive showcase in the third quarter, holding Dixie State to 13.3 percent shooting and allowing just nine points. By the time that quarter came to a close, they led 66-33.

Their biggest lead of the night came in the fourth as Kinsley Barrington knocked down a jumper with 2:17 left to give SUU a 78-40 lead. There was no coming back from there for the Trailblazers as the Thunderbirds ran away with the 80-44 win.

The Lady T-Birds will now turn their attention to Big Sky Conference play as they host Montana State on December 31.
