CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team will return to the court this week to start a six-game home stretch, starting with William Jessup University on December 9 and Grand Canyon University on December 12.
Last Time Out
Two weeks ago the Lady T-Birds opened the 2020-21 season against Utah Valley in Orem. The Thunderbirds led 23-17 at halftime, but would go on to drop their first game of the season 47-58.
Liz Graves was the leading scorer for the Thunderbirds with 11 points and was one rebound away from her first double-double as a T-Bird. Darri Frandsen was the leading rebounder with 11. Lizzy Williamson had two blocks in her first game as a Thunderbird.
The team was supposed to open Big Sky play last weekend against Montana, but a positive test within the program forced them to pause all team activities.
Scouting Report: William Jessup Warriors (1-1)
The Warriors are coming off a week in which they had three games canceled "due to contract tracing from a previous contest." They were supposed to play Sacramento State, UC Davis, and Simpson University over a stretch of three days.
They last played on November 28 when they lost to the University of Nevada 65-66 in Reno. Before that, WJU opened their season on Halloween with a 93-27 blowout of Bethesda University.
Senior Miranda Zaragoza is currently averaging 16 points per game, good enough for third in the Golden State Athletic Conference. She also leads the team and is second in the GSAC in rebounding, averaging 10.5 per game.
The Warriors will play California Baptist on Tuesday before coming to Cedar City.
Scouting Report: Grand Canyon Antelopes (3-0)
The Antelopes have won their first three games of the season, beating Weber State, Benedictine Mesa, and Loyola Marymount over the last two weeks.
Freshman Katie Scott currently leads the Western Athletic Conference in scoring, averaging 20.7 points per game. She also leads GCU in rebounding, averaging 6.3 per game.
Head coach Molly Miller is in her first season at the helm of the program. Miller previously spent six seasons as the head coach of Division II Drury University where she compiled a record of 180-17.
The Antelopes will play Northern Arizona on Wednesday before heading to Cedar City.
