Lady T-Birds Downed By Bengals In Pocatello

POCATELLO, Idaho - The Southern Utah women's basketball team dropped a road matchup against Idaho State Saturday afternoon 54-73.

Rebecca Cardenas was the leading scorer for the T-Birds with 13 points. She went 10-for-10 from the free throw line and had three rebounds. Ashley Larsen had 12 points and five rebounds and Shalyn Fano had 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals.

As a team the Thunderbirds could never quite get things going on the floor, shooting just 31.3 percent and they were out-rebounded by the Bengals 29-39.

Southern Utah started the game with a 2-0 advantage as Cardenas knocked down two free throws that were awarded on an administrative technical foul against Idaho State. The lead didn't last long though as the Bengals opened the game on a 10-0 run to take a quick 10-2 lead.

The Bengals fouled eight times in the first quarter giving the Thunderbirds 13 shots from the charity stripe, keeping them in the game as they scored just three buckets from the field.

It was all Idaho State from there though as they continued to build their lead, leading by 10 at the end of the first quarter and by 15 at halftime.

The Bengals continued to pile it on in the second half, leading by 22 at the end of the third quarter and by as much as 27 with 3:53 to go in the game. The Thunderbirds were able to close out the game on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 19 by the time the clock hit zero.

The Thunderbirds will be on the road again next week to take on Northern Colorado and Portland State.
