CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team took just their second home loss of the season Thursday night 62-71 against Sacramento State.
Jessica Chatman picked up her first double-double of the season, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Madelyn Eaton was the leading scorer for the Thunderbirds with 16 points. She also had eight rebounds and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Rebecca Cardenas also broke double-digits with 11 points. She moved into sole position of eighth place on the SUU all-time scoring list.
As a team, the Thunderbirds shot just 32.8 percent from the field, but they outrebounded the Hornets 39-34 and they scored 20 points off of 17 Hornet turnovers.
There were seven lead changes in a tightly contested first half in which both teams shot around 37 percent from the field, turned the ball over seven times each, and never built a lead bigger than five points. Chatman and SAC's Tiana Johnson both had 10 points in the first half and the teams went into the break tied up at 33-33.
However, it was the Hornets that came out hot in the second half, opening a 14-0 run to take a 49-35 lead with 5:28 to go in the third quarter. They were able to hold the T-Birds off for the remainder of the game and close out the win for the second time this season.
The Thunderbirds will be back in action on Saturday when they host Northern Arizona at 2:00 p.m.
