Thunderbirds Wrap Up Play In Campbell/Cartier Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Southern Utah softball team competed in the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State over the weekend where they dropped games against BYU, CSU Fullerton, and the host Aztecs.

As a team, the Thunderbirds hit .228 on the weekend with an on-base percentage of .297 and a slugging percentage of .347.

Junior Brooke Brown hit a whopping .556, going 5-for-9 with a home run, eight total bases, and three walks. Junior Skyler Ball hit .364 (4-for-11) with a run scored. Sophomore Makall Whetten hit two home runs with four total RBI and two runs scored. Junior Koryne Coddington saw the bulk of the time in the circle, throwing 10.1 innings, giving up five earned runs, and striking out nine.

The Thunderbirds opened play on Friday against BYU where they had eight hits in the game, but ended up losing 11-2. Brown and Skyler Ball both went 2-for-3 in the contest and Whetten hit her first home run of the weekend.

Later that day they played their first game of the weekend against SDSU, losing 5-4. Whetten hit a three-run home run and Kamryn Grover pitched 3.1 innings in relief, giving up just two hits and zero runs.

Southern Utah outhit CSUF in their third game of the weekend, but a few crucial errors led them to a 7-4 loss. Brown and Ball both went 2-for-3 again and Samantha Guerra went 2-for-4 in the defeat.

The Thunderbirds only had three hits in the weekend's finale against the Aztecs, losing 10-0 in five innings.

The team will take this weekend off before returning to the field next weekend to compete in the Sun Devil Classic hosted by Arizona State.
