Lady T-Birds Secure Season Sweep of Northern Colorado With Tenth Home Victory

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team picked up a season sweep of Northern Colorado Thursday night with a dominant 64-50 win over the Bears. The win pushed Southern Utah to 14-10 on the season and 8-7 in Big Sky play.

Rebecca Cardenas led all scorers with 18 points in the win. She also pulled down nine rebounds, dished out six assists, and picked up three steals. Darri Frandsen put up 11 points and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Shalyn Fano alos broke into double-digits with 10 points and pulled in six rebounds.

The Thunderbirds held the Bears scoreless (0-for-12) from the three-point line for the second time this season, making them a combined 0-for-28 from beyond the arc against the T-Birds in two games. Southern Utah outshot the Bears 40.7 percent to 36.5 percent from the field and forced them into 20 turnovers.

A tight first quarter quickly got away from the Bears in the second quarter, as the Thunderbirds used a 7-0 to close out the quarter with a seven-point lead. Cardenas and Frandsen combined for 21 points in the first half, the T-Birds went 11-for-13 from the free throw line, and they took a 36-29 lead into the break.

The Thunderbirds continued to pile on in the second half, holding the Bears to just 35 percent in the third quarter and then 25 percent in the fourth. They also outrebounded UNC 20-16 in the half. They used a couple of 5-0 runs in the fourth quarter to extend their lead, pushing it as high as 15 points with 1:32 left to play. 

The Thunderbirds will host Weber State on Saturday February 22 with a chance to win three conference games in a row for the first time since 2014-15.
