RECAP | No. 19 Thunderbirds Fall to No. 17 Iowa StateÂ
CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Southern Utah University gymnastics team posted a 195.775 in their home contest against the victorious No. 17 Iowa State, who earned a 196.300.Â
"We fell a bit flat this evening," said head coach Scotty Bauman. "But that doesn't mean that there weren't great things happening. I am so proud of Karley McClain's performance and her ability to continue to compete so fiercely week after week. We are excited for Monday and I know that this team will come out with the biggest vengeance of all time."Â
Upon conclusion of the meet two T-Birds were named individual event champions and Karley McClain was named the all-around champion.Â
The Thunderbirds posted their best score of the night on vault as they were awarded a 49.175. Madison McBride topped the event score sheet for SUU with her 9.875, followed by four Flippin' Birds' that stuck 9.825's (Stephanie Tervort, Rachel Smith, Caitlin Kho, and Morgan Alfaro).
Their second best performance was on floor as the T-Birds danced their way to a 49.150. McClain was crowned event champion after hitting a 9.925, her second best score of the season. Hannah Nipp and McBride followed with two 9.875's, while Caitlin Kho added in a 9.800, ending with Autumn Jorgensen's 9.675.Â
On bars the Thunderbirds were led by Becky Rozsa-Thompson, who was named the event champion, as she stuck a 9.875. Shylen Murakami followed Thompson with a 9.850. Nipp and McClain both chipped in 9.800's. Caitlin Kho finished with a 9.775.Â
SUU earned a 48.350 on beam after a 9.875 performance from McClain, a 9.825 routine from Nipp, a 9.775 from Murakami and a 9.725 Smith.Â
