Lady T-Birds Riding Three-Game Winning Streak Into Final Regular Season Road Trip

CEDAR CITY, Utah - With just two weeks left in the regular season, the Southern Utah women's basketball team will head out on their final road trip to take on Eastern Washington on Thursday February 27 and Idaho on Saturday February 29.

Last Time Out

The Thunderbirds are currently in the midst of a three-game winning streak with wins over Northern Colorado and Weber State last week.

In the win over the Bears, Rebecca Cardenas led all scorers with 18 points in the win. She also pulled down nine rebounds, dished out six assists, and picked up three steals. Darri Frandsen put up 11 points and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Shalyn Fano also broke into double-digits with 10 points and pulled in six rebounds.

Against the Wildcats, Fano picked up her second double-double of the season in the win, leading the T-Birds in both scoring a rebounding with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Frandsen scored 17 and pulled in nine rebounds, Cardenas had 15 points and six steals, Harley Hansen had 16 points, and Jessica Chatman pulled down 11 rebounds.

State of the Big Sky

The T-Birds currently sit at 9-7 in Big Sky play, which puts them in a tie for fifth place with Montana. Both teams have just four more games to decide who will take that fifth and final bye slot, heading into the Big Sky Conference Tournament.

Montana State continues to dominate the conference and is the only team that has locked in a bye in the tournament with their 15-1 record. Northern Arizona, Idaho, and Idaho State round out the top four.

The Thunderbirds have the fourth best scoring offense in the conference and are third in the Big Sky in steals.

Cardenas still leads the conference in scoring at 17.4 points per game and steals at 3.0 per game.

Scouting Report: Eastern Washington Eagles (4-21, 3-13 BSC)

The Eagles have won two of their last three games, with the lone loss coming in a 63-58 decision against second-place Northern Arizona on the road.

Freshman Jenna Dick leads the Eagles with 10.2 points per game. She is ranked ninth nationally in three-point field goal percentage, dropping them in at a rate of 45.5 percent. Bella Cravens currently averages 9.9 points per game to rank third on the team and is second in the conference with 8.2 rebounds per game.

The Thunderbirds won the first matchup of the season 71-50 in Cedar City.

Scouting Report: Idaho Vandals (16-9, 11-5 BSC)

The Vandals are coming off a split weekend on the road, falling to Northern Arizona 70-67 in double-overtime on Thursday before topping Sacramento State 96-88 on Saturday.

Gina Marxen leads the Vandals in scoring this season with 13.9 points per game and assists with 4.5 per game. The sophomore leads the Big Sky in three-pointers per game (3.2) and in minutes played per game with 38.0 per game. Freshman Beyonce Bea averages 12.8 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game.

The Vandals took home the win earlier this season in Cedar City and have not lost to the Thunderbirds since joining the Big Sky in 2014.
