CEDAR CITY, Utah - After closing out one of their most successful regular seasons since joining the Big Sky, the Southern Utah women's basketball team will head to the Big Sky Conference Championship Tournament in Boise, Idaho this upcoming week. The Thunderbirds will go in as the sixth seed in the tournament after finishing 11-9 in conference play. They will take on the No.11-seeded Weber State Wildcats on Monday, March 9 in the third game of the tournament.
Last Time Out
The Thunderbirds split their final week of the regular season, falling to the regular season champion Montana State Bobcats before defeating Montana in overtime 84-81.
In the win over the Grizzlies, Rebecca Cardenas led all scorers with 24 points in her final game in Cedar City. She also added seven assists and five steals and shot 50 percent from the field. Harley Hansen had 15 points and three steals. Darri Frandsen picked up a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and also had four blocks.
"We have a group that is giving us 100 percent. We might not be the biggest or the strongest, but we are playing the hardest and we play for each other," Sanders said. "We are excited to keep playing and we feel good about what lies ahead for us."
The T-Birds were down 13 points at one point in the third quarter and were able to come all the way back and tie the game at 72-72 on a step-back jumper from Cardenas. They never trailed in overtime and have now outscored opponents 54-27 in extra time. They are currently 4-0 in overtime games.
Cardenas had a combined 38 points, 12 assists, and six steals between the two games. Hansen put up 27 points.
Scouting Report: Weber State Wildcats (4-25, 2-18 BSC)
The Wildcats also closed out their regular season with an overtime win, beating Eastern Washington 83-77. The win snapped a 15-game losing streak and gave them just their second win in conference play with the other coming over Northern Colorado in January.
Liz Graves and Ula Chamberlain are both averaging double-digits in scoring with Graves leading the team at 11.0 points per game and Chamberlain averaging 10.6 ppg. Jadyn Matthews leads the team in rebounding, averaging 5.8 per game.
The Thunderbirds swept the season series with the Wildcats winning in Ogden 87-71 and again in Cedar City 82-66. They have won three of the last four matchups with their only loss during that time coming by one point in Ogden last season.
