CEDAR CITY, Utah - After having their previously scheduled games against Eastern Washington canceled this week, the Southern Utah women's basketball team will now host University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for a two-game series on Sunday January 17 and Monday January 18.
Last Time Out
Last weekend, the Thunderbirds opened Big Sky play against Idaho and lost both games. Game one saw the Thunderbirds mount a comeback in the third quarter and even take a lead in the fourth, before ultimately losing 64-69. Game two was a wire-to-wire victory for the Vandals as they ran away with the 77-61 win.
Cherita Daugherty was the leading scorer in game one with 18 points and Liz Graves and Darri Frandsen both posted double-doubles. Madelyn Eaton was the leading scorer in game two with 15 points.
The Lady T-Birds are now 3-4 on the season and 0-2 in Big Sky play.
T-Birds By the Numbers
Graves continues to lead the Thunderbirds in scoring, averaging 17 points per game. She is second in the Big Sky in that category, but leads the conference in field goal percentage at 52.9 percent.
Frandsen leads the team in rebounding, averaging 8.9 rebounds per game. She is third in the Big Sky in rebounding and also in blocks, averaging 1.9 per game.
Eaton leads the team in steals with 13 and Daugherty leads in assists with 18.
As a team, Southern Utah leads the Big Sky in every rebounding category. They have a rebounding margin of +12.1, nine rebounds higher than the next team in the conference. The Thunderbirds are averaging 46.4 rebounds per game while their opponents are averaging just 34.3.
The T-Birds are also the fourth highest scoring team in the Big Sky, averaging 69.1 points per game.
Scouting Report: UTRGV Vaqueros (4-2)
The Vaqueros have had their last seven scheduled games canceled and have not played since December 19 when they beat Prairie View A&M 66-63.
Amara Graham is the team's leading scorer, averaging 16.8 points per game. She is third in the WAC in scoring and fifth in field goal percentage, dropping them in at a rate of 51.6 percent. Tiffany McGarity is the team's leading rebounder, averaging 5.8 per game.
UTRGV was originally scheduled to travel to St. George this weekend for a WAC matchup with Dixie State, but last week the Trailblazers suspended all competition related activities for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

Sunday's game is set to tip off at 3:00 p.m. inside the America First Event Center. Monday's game will tip off at 6:30 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on PlutoTV channel 1055 and live stats will be available at tbirdstats.com.
