Flippin’ Birds Take Down Air Force In 2021 Home Opener

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah gymnastics team picked up their first win of the season Saturday night, beating Air Force 195.800-190.450 inside the America First Event Center.

"I thought for as many new routines we are putting in the lineups, I'm loving what I'm seeing out of these girls. That's a great improvement over our last meet," head coach Scotty Bauman said. "We didn't have to count any falls tonight, but we still had some easy mistakes we needed to get rid of. As long as they start calming down in warm-ups and in the meets we are going to be just fine. I loved seeing Emma Wissman go in there. It had been a couple years since she competed beam for us and tonight was just beautiful."

The Flippin' Birds dominated the night, beating the Falcons on all four events. Karley McClain, Hannah Nipp, Caitlin Kho, and Aubri Schwartze all earned event titles as Kho and McClain earned the top score on vault, McClain, Nipp, and Schwartze earned the top score on bars, McClain was the top performer on beam and the all-around, and Nipp was the top performer on floor.

Southern Utah started the night on vault where they scored their lowest team score of the night with a 48.725. McClain and Kho both hit 9.800's for the highest scores of the night. Morgan Alfaro scored a 9.775, Molly Jozwiakowski scored a 9.675, and Stephanie Tervort scored a 9.600.

When the T-Birds moved to bars, they kicked things up a notch, scoring a 49.075 as a team. McClain, Nipp, and Schwartze all scored a 9.825 for the top score of the night. Nikki Thomas and Shylen Murakami both scored 9.800's to round out the scoring.

The third rotation of the night for the Flippin' Birds was beam where they scored a 48.725. McClain led the way with a 9.875 followed by a 9.850 from Nipp. Murakami scored a 9.800, Emma Wissman scored a 9.750, and Rachel Smith scored a 9.450.

The final rotation was the strongest of the night for the Thunderbirds as they scored a 49.275 on floor. Nipp led the way with a 9.900, the highest score of the night on any event. Hailey Vultaggio scored a 9.875, Schwartze and Smith both scored a 9.850, and Jozwiakowski scored a 9.800.

McClain improved on her all-around score from last week, finishing with a 39.275.

The Flippin' Birds will continue their season next weekend in Logan against Utah State.
