Thunderbirds Win Double Overtime Thriller Over Wildcats to Sweep Series

OGDEN, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team swept their two-game series against Weber State Saturday afternoon with a double overtime 76-74 win over the Wildcats.

Cherita Daugherty was the leading scorer for the T-Birds, leading all scorers with a career-high 24 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out four assists. Liz Graves and Darri Frandsen both posted double-doubles as Graves scored 18 points and pulled in 12 rebounds and Frandsen scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Frandsen also had four blocks.

The starting five of Daugherty, Graves, Frandsen, Madelyn Eaton, and Margarita Satini scored 74 of Southern Utah's 76 points.

Similar to game one on Thursday, Saturday's game was a roller coaster ride for the T-Birds. With the score tied at 4-4 early, they put together a 12-0 run over two minutes of play to open a 16-4 lead. However, it wouldn't be long before the Wildcats would start to chip away at the lead, putting together a 10-0 run of their own to make it 18-16 SUU with 2:20 remaining in the quarter.

The Thunderbirds would close out the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 24-16 lead into the second.

The second quarter was a very different quarter for the Thunderbirds as they shot just 23 percent from the floor, only scoring six points. They led 30-20 with 6:07 remaining in the quarter, but the Wildcats then went on a 13-0 run for the rest of the half. They took their first lead of the game with just under a minute to go and went into halftime up 33-30 over Southern Utah.

When the third quarter began, the Wildcats pushed their lead to seven points before the Thunderbirds got on the board. A three-pointer from Graves broke the Weber State run and the teams began to go back-and-forth again. The T-Birds pulled within one point as Satini stole the ball and layed it in to make it 43-44 with 3:23 left in the quarter. They would go into the fourth quarter down 49-53.

With 7:22 remaining in regulation, Eaton knocked down a three to tie the game at 55-55, before Daughtery gave the Thunderbirds the lead with 6:48 to go. The game would tie three more times before the end of regulation as the Wildcats scored the final bucket with 18 seconds left to send the teams to overtime at 61-61.

Daugherty knocked down two threes and scored seven total points in the first overtime period. The Wildcats led by five points with 1:41 remaining, but a Daugherty three followed by a bucket from Frandsen would tie the game once again at 70-70, forcing double overtime.

Southern Utah went 0-for-4 from the field in the second overtime period, but were 6-for-6 from the free throw line and held the Wildcats to just four points to close out the 76-74 victory.

The Thunderbirds will continue their season at home next week as they host Idaho State.
