CEDAR CITY, Utah - The No. 17 Southern Utah gymnastics team won their third dual meet in a row Friday night, defeating No. 20 Boise State 196.425-194.825.
"I was so proud of the girls, just the way they went out there and did it tonight," SUU head coach Scott Bauman said following the meet. "We went 24-for-24, and you can't really ask for much more than that."
Karley McClain had the high score of the night as she hit a season-high 9.925 on floor to close out the meet. She scored a 39.300 in the all-around and took home both the floor and all-around event titles. The Flippin' Birds swept every event title as Morgan Alfaro had the high score on vault, Shylen Murakami had the high score on bars, Hannah Nipp and McClain both shared the beam title, and McClain had the top score on floor.
The Thunderbirds started the night on vault where they matched a season-high, scoring a 48.975 as a team. Alfaro had the top score of the night with a 9.875, followed by McClain and Stephanie Tervort at 9.825. Rachel Smith scored a 9.775 and Molly Jozwiakowski scored a 9.675 to round out the scoring.
On bars, the Flippin' Birds scored a 49.050, led by a 9.900 for Murakami, her second in a row. Nikki Thomas scored a 9.825 and Aubri Schwartze, Mayson Bentley, and Jozwiakowski all scored 9.775's to round out the scoring.
The Thunderbirds also scored a 49.050 on beam, their second-highest score of the season. McClain and Nipp both hit the high score on the event, as they both scored 9.850. Murakami scored a 9.825, Smith scored a 9.775, and Emma Wissman scored a 9.750.
The Flippin' Birds would head into the final rotation up by just .025.
Floor ended up being Southern Utah's strongest event of the night, as they scored a 49.350 as a team. McClain led the way with her season-high 9.925, followed by a 9.900 from Jozwiakowski. Smith scored a career-high 9.875 and Schwartze scored a 9.850. Nipp and Hailey Vultaggio both scored 9.800's to round out the scoring.
"We were all just having fun," Jozwiakowski said about the fourth and final rotation. "And honestly we do our best when we are relaxed, having fun and doing what we do every day in practice."
The Flippin' Birds will travel to Provo next week to take on BYU on Friday February 5.
