Thunderbirds Honor Seniors, Close out 2021 Season

CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Southern Utah University Football team honored its seniors prior to the final game of the 2021 season Saturday afternoon as the year came to a close in the form of a loss to Weber State.

Before kickoff, SUU recognized Noah Alejado, Philip Brown, Justin Brown, Thomas Duckett, Akili Gray, Kameron Jackson, Quaid Murray, Greg Rogers, Jalen Russell and Mykeal White for their contributions to the program. Braxton Jones and La'akea Kaho'ohanohano-Davis were also honored as both plan to explore potential opportunities in the 2022 NFL draft.

The Beehive Bowl between Southern Utah and Weber State went the Wildcats' way as WSU took home a 62-0 victory. The loss marked the end of the season for SUU as the T-Birds finished the year with a record of 1-10. Weber State improved to 5-5 for the year and will play one more year to close out its schedule.

"I apologize to the SUU football program and anybody who has been a part of it, and also to the SUU community and Cedar City," said head coach Demario Warren. "I've never made excuses before, and so I won't start now. I try to give this everything I've got and pour everything I have into it. I love SUU and Cedar City, and I'm sorry we couldn't give them more tonight."

Duckett led the way in individual yardage for Southern Utah on the night with 31 rushing yards while Lance Lawson and Devon Sa'Chisolm both recorded 17 yards receiving. Treyson Johnson led the defense with eight tackles, and Francis Bemiy tallied seven tackles including one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss.

The end of the 2021 season marks Southern Utah's final season competing in the Big Sky Conference. The Thunderbirds will officially join the Western Athletic Conference in July of 2022 and will compete there next season. Next season's conference and nonconference schedules will be released as they become finalized.
