CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah gymnastics team improved on their score from one week ago by scoring a 196.550, but so did the BYU Cougars as they scored their highest score of the season with a 197.075 in a MRGC rematch Friday night.
Morgan Alfaro and Rachel Smith both earned a share of the vault event title by scoring 9.850s on the event. Aubri Schwartze and Hannah Nipp both earned a share of the beam event title as they scored 9.875s, a career-high for Schwartze. Nikki Thomas and Shylen Murakami both scored 9.900s on bars and Schwartze and Molly Jozwiakowski each scored a 9.900 on floor.
The Flippin' Birds started the night on vault where they scored a 48.975 as a team. Alfaro and Smith led the way with their 9.850s. Karley McClain scored a 9.775 and both Stephanie Tervort and Caitlin Kho scored 9.750s.
Southern Utah scored their second-highest bars score of the season Friday night with a 49.175. Thomas and Murakami led the way with their 9.900s, a career-high for Thomas. McClain scored a 9.825, Nipp scored a 9.800, and Schwartze rounded out the scoring with a 9.750.
On beam, the Thunderbirds scored a 49.125, thanks to a pair of 9.875s from Schwartze and Nipp. Murakami and Emma Wissman both scored a 9.800 and Smith and McClain each hit a 9.775.
The Flippin' Birds wrapped things up on floor where they had their best performance of the night, scoring a 49.275. Schwartze and Jozwiakowski's 9.900s led the way followed by a 9.850 from McClain. Hailey Vultaggio scored a 9.825 and Rachel Smith scored a 9.800.
McClain took second place in the all-around with a combined score of 39.225.
The Flippin' Birds will host Utah State next Friday February 19 for their final home meet of the season.
