Big Second Inning Propels Thunderbirds to Win Over Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team picked up their first win of the season Tuesday afternoon, beating Dixie State 12-6 in St. George.

Josey White hit her second grand slam of the season in the win, highlighting a six-run second inning with the blast. Makall Whetten and Reilly Williams also hit home runs in the game, giving the T-Birds three total on the day.

Gianna Carosone went 3-for-4 in the contest with a run scored. Dayna Hokanson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Tyler Denhart picked up her first career win in the circle after pitching five innings of relief and giving up just three runs on six hits. Grace Owen also pitched a scoreless inning of relief to close out the Trailblazers.

The Thunderbirds got on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the first behind a RBI double from Hokanson and a RBI single from Brooke Brown. However, Dixie quickly answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-2.

Then the bats exploded for Southern Utah in the top of the second inning as they sent 12 T-Birds to the plate, racked up five hits, and scored six runs. Hokanson knocked in the first one to tie the game with a bases-loaded single. Then White hit her grand slam to make it 7-3 SUU. After loading the bases again, the Thunderbirds would add one more run on an error by the Trailblazers.

Dixie State tacked on three runs in the bottom of the inning, but that would be the last time they would score in the game.

Whetten hit her two-run blast in the top of the fifth and Williams hit her solo shot in the sixth to make it 12-6.

Owen faced three Trailblazers in the seventh and sent them all back to the dugout to close out the win.

The Thunderbirds will be back in action this weekend as they compete in the Hillenbrand Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona.
