SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Southern Utah women's basketball team dropped a matchup with Sacramento State Saturday afternoon 66-73 in California. Darri Frandsen had seven blocks in the contest, which is tied for the highest in a single-game in Southern Utah history. The last Thunderbird to have seven blocks in a game was Myndee Larsen in 1998.
Liz Graves was the leading scorer for the Thunderbirds with 18 points. She also pulled down 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Frandsen also had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Thunderbirds had 11 blocks on the day, which is tied for the second-highest team number in a single-game in program history. They also outrebounded the Hornets 39-33.
Neither team led by more than five points in the first half and there were five lead changes in the first 20 minutes of play. The Hornets led it 21-16 with 6:42 to play in the half when the T-Birds started to chip away. Graves knocked down two free throws to tie it and gave Southern Utah the lead with a layup with 1:51 to go. She would score two more times before halftime, giving the Thunderbirds a 31-29 at the break.
The T-Birds were able to push their lead to seven in the third quarter, but the Hornets would close it out with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 50-50 with 10 minutes to go.
With 7:15 remaining, Sacramento State went on a 13-0 run over nearly five minutes of play to make it 55-65. Cherita Daugherty knocked down two three-pointers in the final minutes, but it wouldn't be enough as the Hornets went on to win 73-66.
The Lady T-Birds will play their final road Big Sky game next week on Thursday February 25 against Northern Arizona.
