Thunderbirds Put Perfect Home Record On The Line Against Northern Arizona; Make Return Trip To Flagstaff

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Thunderbird men's basketball team will put their perfect home record on the line this week in their final game inside the America First Event Center for the year, as they square off against the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona on Wednesday at 6 p.m. MT. They will then complete their home-and-home series against NAU with a contest in Flagstaff on Friday.

Last Time Out

In their most recent home series, the Thunderbirds completed their first regular season sweep of the Sacramento State Hornets since joining the Big Sky Conference. They won the first matchup 88-69, and claimed the second 77-57.

Tevian Jones had a big weekend for the Thunderbirds, scoring 39 points combined.

The victories moved the Thunderbirds to 13-3 overall, and 8-2 in the Big Sky Conference on the year.

Chasing History

On Wednesday, the Thunderbirds will be looking to set a couple more major milestones for the program. If the T-Birds are to go 14-0 at home this season, it will be the most home wins the program has ever had during its Division I era for a single season, and will also be only the second time an SUU team has finished with a perfect home record.

The last team to accomplish this feat was the 2000-01 Thunderbird squad, that went 13-0 en route to a bid in the NCAA Tournament.

Also, Thunderbird senior guard Dre Marin is only six points away from hitting the 1,000-point milestone. He would be only the seventh player in SUU's Division I history to reach this milestone, and only the 12th in the entire basketball history of Southern Utah University.

Stat Leaders

Through 19 contests, Jones sits third in the Big Sky in terms of scoring average at 17.6 points per game so far this season. Maizen Fausett is 10th in the Big Sky for scoring and second for SUU at 13.6 ppg.

Fausett is also highly ranked in the league when it comes to rebounding, sitting in sixth with 6.5 rebounds per game.

John Knight III is second in the Big Sky when it comes to assists with 4.3 per contest, and fourth in steals at 1.5 per game.

Opponent Preview: Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (5-13, 4-8 Big Sky)

Following a sweep at the hands of the Weber State Wildcats, the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona will travel to Cedar City with a 5-13 overall record, and a 4-8 mark in Big Sky play.

Cameron Shelton does a little bit of everything for the Lumberjacks. He is currently the leading scorer in the Big Sky Conference, averaging 20.6 ppg. He also leads the team in rebounding, assists and steals. He is currently the only Lumberjack that averages in double figures in terms of scoring.

NAU head coach Shane Burcar was hired by the Lumberjacks on March 25, 2020 and is serving in his first season as head coach. He joined the NAU staff in April of 2018 as an assistant coach.

Big Sky At A Glance

With two weeks of regular season action remaining, the race for the Big Sky Tournament is heating up.

Currently, the Eagles of Eastern Washington sit on top of the league standings with an 11-2 Big Sky record. EWU is 12-6 overall on the year.

Southern Utah has the same amount of losses as Eastern Washington, but due to cancellations does not have as many games played at 8-2. If the tournament started today, they would receive a BYE to the second round. The top five teams in the Big Sky standings at the conclusion of the regular season receive a BYE to the second round.

Weber State sits in third place with a 9-3 rebound, closely followed by Idaho State (7-3) and Montana State (6-4).

'University of the Parks' Game

On Wednesday, the Thunderbirds will be celebrating the fact that Southern Utah University is also known as 'The University of the Parks' by wearing warmpus with the logo.
