SANTA CLARA, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team opened a three-game two-day series with Utah Valley Friday afternoon with a 7-9 loss in the first game of the series.
Dayna Hokanson and Mikelle Magalogo both hit home runs in the loss, Hokanson's a solo shot in the first inning and Magalogo's a two-run bomb in the second. Both had two RBI and combined for three runs scored. Josey White went 2-for-3 and Gianna Carosone went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Tyler Denhart pitched four innings in the circle, giving up five earned runs on just six hits. Grace Owen pitched 1.1 innings of hitless relief with three strikeouts.
The Thunderbirds scored the first five runs of the game and by the middle of the fourth inning, led 5-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Wolverines put three runs on the board to make it 5-3. With two runners on, Kalena Shepherd pinch hit in the top fifth and hit the first pitch she saw into right field to make it 6-3 SUU.
Utah Valley exploded for six runs in a bottom of the fifth inning that included a grand slam and a solo shot and with just two innings left to play, ended up leading 9-6.
The Thunderbirds scored one more time in the sixth on an error by the UVU center fielder, but could not catch up to the Wolverines before the game came to an end.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 12:00 p.m.
