Lady T-Birds Overpower Lumberjacks In Cedar City

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah women's basketball team bounced back Saturday with a huge 97-80 win over Northern Arizona.

The Thunderbirds shot 65.0 percent (39-for-60) from the floor as a team, which is the second-best single-game field goal percentage in the history of the program. Their 97 points is the highest single-game total since February 25, 2017 when they scored 104 points against Sacramento State. It is also tied for the third-highest mark in the Big Sky this season so far.

Cherita Daugherty was the leading scorer for the Thunderbirds with 22 points on 9-for-11 shooting. She also had six assists and six rebounds. Pyper Thornberry set new career-highs in both points and rebounds with 14 points and seven rebounds. Liz Graves and Madelyn Eaton both scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds.

Southern Utah also outrebounded NAU 36-30, outscored them in the paint 52-34, and held them to just 38.4 percent shooting.

The T-Birds shot almost 70 percent in the first half, but didn't start pulling away from the Lumberjacks until there was 2:48 left in the second quarter. Up by just three, they put together a 10-0 scoring run to push their lead all the way to 13.

They would go into halftime leading 50-40.

The Thunderbirds kept the pressure on in the second half. They shot 50 percent from the floor in the third quarter, before turning things up a notch in the fourth, posting a whopping 76.9 shooting percentage in the final 10 minutes.

NAU closed the gap towards the end of the third quarter at 66-60, but then were outscored 31-20 the rest of the way. The T-Birds closed out the game with their biggest lead of the day at 97-80.

The win moves Southern Utah into sixth place in the Big Sky standings with two games left to play in the regular season. They will host Portland State for a two-game series starting on Wednesday March 3.
