PROVO, Utah - Three-time Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference Gymnast of the Week Karley McClain took home another all-around title Friday night as the No. 15 Southern Utah gymnastics team fell to No. 12 BYU 196.175-196.825.
McClain won the all-around title with a combined score of 39.375. The junior scored a 9.900 on floor, a 9.875 on beam, a 9.825 on vault, and a 9.775 on bars. Her 9.900 also earned her a share of the floor event title. Shylen Murakami and Morgan Alfaro also won shares of event titles as Alfaro scored a 9.850 for the top vault score and Murakami scored a 9.900 for the top beam score.
The Flippin' Birds started the night on bars where they scored a 48.950 as a team. Reigning MRGC Bars Specialist of the Week Murakami led the way with a 9.875 followed by Nikki Thomas with a 9.825. McClain scored a 9.775, Mayson Bentley scored a 9.750, and Hannah Nipp and Aubri Schwartze both scored a 9.725 to round out the scoring.
Over on vault, the Thunderbirds scored a combined 48.75. Alfaro led the way with her 9.850 and McClain was right behind with her 9.825. Caitlin Kho scored a 9.800, Stephanie Tervort scored a 9.750, and Brianna Alcantar scored a 9.650 in her first vault as a T-Bird.
Southern Utah was on floor for their third rotation and scored a 49.100 as a team. McClain once again was at the top of the pack with her 9.900. Kayla Horton scored a 9.825 in what was the first collegiate routine for the sophomore. Schwartze and Nipp both scored 9.800's and Hailey Vultaggio rounded out the scoring with a 9.775.
The Thunderbirds scored their highest team score of the night on beam with a 49.250. Murakami's 9.900 was the top score for SUU followed by McClain's 9.875. Schwartze, Nipp, and Emma Wissman all scored 9.825's to round out the scoring.
The Flippin' Birds and the Cougars will match up again next week in Cedar City on February 12.
