BOISE, Idaho – With the score tied at 146.050 apiece heading into the final rotation, Boise State did just enough to earn the victory as the Southern Utah University gymnastics team fell by a score of 194.850-194.700, Friday night at ExtraMile Arena.
The Thunderbirds fell to 2-1 in dual meets on the year, and 1-1 in MRGC competition. Friday's meet served as Boise State's season opener as the Broncos moved to 1-0 on the year.
BARS (48.950)
It was a tough start to the opening rotation of the meet for Southern Utah after a few falls and low scores, but the Thunderbirds quickly recovered thanks to a 9.875 from Shylen Murakami. Karley McClain and Hannah Nipp also contributed solid scores for the T-Birds with a 9.825 and 9.800, respectively.
VAULT (48.825)
Rachel Smith and Caitlin Kho turned in major performances for the Flippin' Birds in the second rotation of the night. Smith's 9.850 and Kho's 9.825 were the top-two routines on vault for either team at the meet. Morgan Alfaro also turned in a score of 9.775 to aid SUU in the event.
FLOOR (48.275)
The floor rotation proved to be the most difficult of the night for Southern Utah, but it also produced the highest score. For the second-straight week, McClain hit the 9.9 mark in the event by scoring a 9.900. Aubri Schwartze recorded a 9.775 and Kaylor Horton earned a score of 9.750, but the next three T-Birds all struggled with falls or deductions.
BEAM (48.750)
Hailey Vultaggio turned in her best performance of the night on the final rotation by leading SUU with a 9.800 on the balance beam. Murakami was next with a 9.775, and Smith and McClain earned identical 9.750s.
Southern Utah will remain on the road for its next meet when it travels to Logan, Utah, for a tri meet with conference and in-state rival Utah State and Ball State of the Mid-American Conference. The meet is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MT.
